I admit it, I don't get why this wasn't published. Like White Sand, this seems like a book at least as good as dozens of published novels I've read, and unlike White Sand, this one has had some polishing done and doesn't have egregious editing problems. Sure, the plot concept IS very 1980's/90's farmboy-to-hero's journey, but honestly, that might've been overdone then, but now it's kind of refreshingly nostalgic.
