If Mrs. Allen points out how wonderful it would be if they actually knew anybody in Bath one more time, I think someone is bound to snap and murder her, which would probably make Catherine happy since that's definitely the sort of thing to happen to the friend of a heroine

It's been nearly two decades since the last time I read anything by John C. Wright, which kinda makes me want to hunt down Last Guardian of Everness and read it again.

"Lady Catherine had many other questions to ask respecting their journey, and as she did not answer them all herself, attention was necessary..." what I wouldn't give to put Mr. Bennet in the room with Lady Catherine and watch the carnage

there's a meme where a character does a sick burn and then the video freeze frames, a pair of pixel sunglasses appear on their face, and John Cena's intro music plays in the background. I imagine that happening about half-to-two/thirds the time Mr. Bennet has something to say. Austen missed a great opportunity not writing a sequel about Mr. Bennet doing a grand tour and making snarky comments across Europe.

This seems weird to say but... has everyone who's ever adapted this not realized that Austen is making fun of these characters and how seriously they take themselves? The adaptations (as I remember from growing up with three sisters) are so melodramatic, but this is almost Wodehousian in its humor. Mr. Collins and Mrs. Bennet are always a joke but Darcy and Elizabeth are almost as silly, in their own ways.

Started reading this on a whim last night and have to say, Mr. Bennet is hilarious.
