Finished The Levee (Blackwater, #2/6). McDowell is really good at world building and illustrates that process not by using exposition but by using the characters actions and interactions. Next: The House (Blackwater, #3/6).

”Elinor laughed. ’Do you think this river is going to hurt *my* little girl?’ And with that, Elinor flung her newborn daughter into the swirling black current of the Perdido. She might have been a fisherman tossing a too-small catch back into the river.”

I wonder if John Langan has read Blackwater. Got The Fisherman vibes when I read this paragraph.

Finished The Flood (Blackwater, #1/6). This is everything I liked about The Elementals extended to an epic, generational Southern gothic. The focus is on a character driven family drama - and McDowell writes families like noone else - but with elements of horror so subtly interspersed that they read as the most naturally occuring events despite their terrifying nature.
