Augustine's reading that the sin we cannot commit as Christians is hatred of our brothers feels a bit reductive. I also think lying about Christ in the flesh is in view in 1 John. However, Augustine certainly establishes in my mind with some excellent pastoral exhortation that failure to love the brethren is the kind of sin that leads to death.

Leo is eating faster, which bodes poorly for pacing on this book. Any tips on which magic spell keeps him from chugging his bottle?

This book is mesmerizing. Chapter 17 and 18 turned a corner for me as I am suddenly seized by more emotional investment that mirrors exactly that of the main character. Great writing!

In the homilies on 1 John and Augustine is such a powerful and lovely preacher. And thinking through the Donatist controversy is very helpful. I think there is a lot to process for anyone who wants to think about the church.

Very encouraged how easy it is to read The Spirit and The Letter as a Protestant. It is not an entirely Protestant framework and his use of "justified" is maybe not as entirely specific as one is used to it being given. But still, I find myself just saying "amen" a lot and being encouraged by the deep grace here.

Also, the difference between capacity, will, and performance in constituting a work was super helpful!
