One of the greatest feats of Disney animation is the fight with the dragon in Sleeping Beauty. Seeing that recreated here, along with a clockwork menagerie reminiscent of E. T. A. Hoffman, almost had me jumping up and down with excitement. And if Miss Campbell has not seen Les Contes d'Hoffman she should find act 1 with the automaton.

I forgot that I had snagged this and put books on hold at the library so updates may be sporadic. But, opening with a sci-fi "Bluebeard's Castle" is a bold move.

Prayer, and Eucharistic adoration in particular, is a dangerous transaction because it threatens the state of mediocrity into which one has settled.

Ok, I have found a part of this book which is potentially useful, if still tedious.

I can't quite figure out if the headache is coming from the fact that this book is poorly organized or the fact that the events that he's describing are so random as to have no coherent line of reasoning behind them.

So the blurb says "In Words without Alloy, Paul Turner traces the history of the lectionary as if it were a person coming to full maturity." So far, the way he presents the development of the lectionary of 1970 looks more like a bunch of college students writing a screenplay under the influence. Influence of what, I'm not entirely sure.

I'm not sure how, but chapter one manages to have too much and not enough detail at the same time.

I think this is the first description we've had of a full scale space battle. Most of the stuff the Rocinante's been mixed up in has been skirmishes and boarding actions. Seeing a fleet battle like this is something else.

I never thought I would ever meet a character whom the phrase, "See you in hell" would apply to so perfectly, but here we are.

Realistically, given the differences of scale, the body count is orders of magnitude higher in The Expanse than it is in A Song of Ice and Fire, but these ones make main character deaths count!

Or maybe the reason Cortázar can't comprehend what's going on isn't his lack of expertise but the fact that he's a complete sociopath.

There are such creatures as vampires. They are undead creatures that prey upon the living. They are of the damned. They seek not merely the physical destruction of their victims, but the spiritual destruction as well. This latter is of my primary concern, but it is closely united with the former. After death, there is no chance if further spiritual corruption- or salvation.

We have shifted from vampiric The Hours to, "Oh yeah, there's a mystery going on too." The mystery was introduced on the first page and I honestly thought it was just a McGuffin.

What a lot of rubbish, I thought with annoyance. Grown adults. Playacting. The rapping on the table would begin soon - wasn't that the ruse employed by those American women, the Fox sisters, who deluded crowds by their performance of spiritualistic revelation? I should get a lotto ticket. The Fox sisters were from my hometown and I just told someone about the Jell-O Museum.

You know you're in good hands when the writer takes some time to give a good, reasonably concise definition of Modernism that doesn't simply quote St. Pius X's famous "It is the synthesis of all heresies."

This book is like The Hours, but with Dracula.
