What the proponents of the Enlightenment actually initiated was the tradition of angry secular attacks on religion in the name of science- attacks like those of their modern counterparts such as Carl Sagan, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Dawkins. Presented as the latest word in sophistication, rationalism, and reason, these assaults are remarkably naïve and simplistic- both then and now.

Alleged Church anti-semitism

...this particular manifestation of anti-Catholic history lives on with renewed venom in recent indictments of Pope Pius XII as Hitler's collaborator in the Holocaust... Ironically, this historical libel has mainly been propagated by alienated Catholics, while the most compelling support for the pope has come from Jews.

Although [Edward] Gibbon was one of the very first "distinguished bigots," he is in excellent company- the list of celebrated, anti-Catholic scholars (some of them still living) is long indeed... No matter how much importance one places on these negative aspects of Church history, it does not justify the extreme exaggerations, false accusations, and patent frauds addressed in the chapters that follow.

I think we're on concentration camp number 4 now.

In "It's a Small World" land, I think Dr Goldenberg and my grandfather share a birthdate. More research required.
