Two Envelopes And A Phone is 32% done with The Iron Dream
This is part of my Stuck in the Seventies reading plan for March, although my two SF picks - this and The Steel Crocodile - cannot be counted on to transport me back to the 1970s. They will just be a quick look at the sort of SF one might encounter from about 50 years ago. Mysteries and General Fiction will be where I enjoy feeling like I'm back in the 1970s.

Me discussing Spinrad’s Bug Jack Barron with a friend caused him to surprise me with gifts of three Spinrad novels. This as a thank-you for all the books I’ve passed on to him over the years. I’ve put off reading them, because he bought editions for me and himself that I would not have picked. I’ve decided to go to The Iron Dream, even though I dislike reading books with this iconography, in public.

I like it, no regrets about taking a chance on it, it reads like a dream, I would read more by the author - all of that…but if I end up at a 3 star rating, not 4 or 5, it will be because the blackmail/adultery/murder plot is not that original. That said, I have a good many pages left and the possibility of great twists that elevate this familiar scenario. We’ll see, I dunno. It has been fun.

Right - so I’m embarrassed. It was about 24 hours ago that I said that it was gonna be all about reading books only from the 1970s. And I got two feet from the starting line…and I’ve reneged on the mandate. All I can say is, this book just came, and I want to make time right away for an author who is actually at Goodreads, and looking for readers. And I did end Feb. with a 1970s pick, so I’ll do one newer book now.

Awright. It took a little self-prodding - I even had other books cued up, at first, to launch March - but I’m gonna try something specific for the upcoming month. March, for me, will be : Stuck in the Seventies. Books published in the 1970s only (not counting a nonfiction pick, any comics, and maybe one Fantasy novel that is part of any series I’ve left hanging). Here we go….!

This is fabulous, as far as I’m concerned. Handmaid’s Tale, meets Mythago Wood…with sprinklings of: The Hungry Moon, The Girl from the Other Side, Mysterium, and even Lady into Fox. I’m always wanting to get back to it.

How, HOW on Earth am I getting a (slight, mind you) Jo Nesbo vibe?! I love it.
