The best explanation of her thoughts about suicide are found in her journal entry about the baby bird they eventually euthanized: Suffering is tyrannous... Composed, perfect and beautiful in death. I wonder if she thought of herself as the baby bird when she decided to end her life...

"I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want... I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life." Such a truth about life, but one you can take as a negative, as she did, that you can never be everything you want to be, or take it as a positive, you only have one life, so live it to the fullest, with no regrets.

..."the present is forever, and forever is always shifting, flowing, melting. This second is life. " "Tonight I am ugly. I have lost all faith in my ability to attract males."

It is going to be a hard book to read, even in small doses. I like the rhythm of her poems, but I can feel the darkness in them ( strange, but true).

I find myself enjoying this one significantly more than I thought I would, and read farther than even I planned for myself. Also enjoying the free lecture series on it from iTunes u

Hard to read a book with such clear prejudices of the time, sobering.

People respond favorably when treated higher and better than they deserve. When you refuse to see the truth in front of you, expect negative results.

Lisa is reading The Man Who Changed the Way We Eat: Craig Claiborne and the American Food Renaissance
This book might not have held my interest at the moment even if it was excellently executed because I was craving a novel to start my summer with. However, the author tends to rabbit trail as he tells the story, so I put it aside for other books at the moment.
