I clicked through to the Forbes article on Goodreads' top reviewers from a year ago, saw some comments on the importance of this site as a focus for readers, saw that of the 25 many have left, are leaving, have had reviews deleted... and saw this quote of the day from Malcolm Forbes: "Isn't it fortunate how selective our recollections usually are."

Otis contacted me again, letting me know that my "A-Number-One" reviews will be part of a live "crawling scroll" to run at the bottom of every user's front page. Exciting! He said there wouldn't be any riffraff allowed: only the top .000001%! He specifically said "and no Ceridwen."

Otis just wrote again, to tell me I'm actually in the top .00001% of goodreaders, better than "most of these yokels." Did anyone else get that email?

Well, hell yes. The Poe riff and the vampire reboot were both--and yet distinctly, differently--wonderful. This is shaping up to be the one of the best collections I've read since Maureen McHugh or Nathan Englander.

is reading
The Wide, Carnivorous Sky and Other Monstrous Geographies
Story one--"How the Day Runs Down"--is a mash-up of Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" and the zombie apocalypse. And it is AMAZING. The wit and care of the pastiche would be sufficient pleasure, but there are moments (as in the play) where the spectacle of death and the fuzzy solace of some salvation (here or hereafter) are superseded by a deep, thoughtful, open-ended grief. Truly an outstanding story.

He still had the hands of a mill worker and occasionally drank wine with the air of someone either on a fabulously exotic mission or saluting the international community.

The goal I'm setting myself for this review: to parse why this is a very good, enormously readable book--but no masterpiece.

Franzen is deeply, deeply interested in the exploration of a certain American strain of unhappiness...
