what this novel needed was more free associative discourse on “the true nature of the jewish mind”. learning a lot about myself and if it keeps it up, this novel will be 5 stars for sure

over 700 pages in. time to introduce not only another character, but an immediate family member of Ulrich’s that has yet to be mentioned. works for me

this is a fantasy novel set in the fictional country of “Austria”

Soliman is the only guy in this novel with any game

writing something vaguely autofictional and naming the character that is your wife “Patience” is a good bit

interesting to see that people (beyond philosophers and critics) were very wary around the turn of the century re: reification of money’s abstract value. glad we’ve figured it out and it’s not an issue anymore

Freud failed to predict the ambivalent step-father

sometimes people seem to protest a bit too much re: Freud

it’s a kind of masochism to get over 500 pages into a novel (less than halfway) and think “wow this is really picking up steam now” because one of the characters starts pontificating on “theological ethics”

i have to wonder: has Knausgaard ever read Exley?

“what was needed was accelerationism…” Musil predicted the CCRU confirmed

thus ends the year of Ulrich. is Musil a Hegelian? jury is still out

i’m on a trend to re-read some old faves before the end of the year. Exley’s trajectory makes me sad to think about. if not for booze, he really coulda been somebody. a contender. instead he’ll probably linger just on the fringe of mainstream success — perhaps the greatest compliment to someone i would describe as “a real writer’s writer”

wow. literature is truly at its apotheosis when 20th century Austrian guys start free-styling on the topic of the “Jewish Mind”

sometimes in massive novels you lose track of what’s going on. not in this one. every chapter is called something like “All is Not Well Between Ulrich and Arnheim”

i too remember going to Europe and being sad that being in Europe didn’t make me feel any different

re-read time for a book i consider to be “very sweet and sincere”

in a way, they were right. it was the Austrian century

idk i’ve counted one or two qualities

post-Hapsburg Austria. they don’t make countries like that anymore

“a seasonless spring day in Autumn” goddamn when Musil is good he’s great

Ulrich is the blueprint (fail-son just kind of hanging out and floundering through life)

such small chapters — very encouraging
