Oh. Ok. SURE. It makes perfect sense thst the rapist should get the girl. Because he's really good-looking. Even though she didn't know him till the last 30 pages, and had two far better men openly courting her AND respecting her. Ugh. In the last 75 pages this book went from 5-star to 3-star. And it only merits that because the prose is gorgeous. >:(

Yep. Tarr can try to paint it however she likes, but it's all just Stockholm Syndrome as a means of whitewashing the fact that her family was slaughtered by Islamic soldiers and she was made into a literal sex slave by them. But never fear! Being an Islamic sex slave is better than being a free, high-born European Christian. I'm...not sure i can finish this. Blergh.

So...to justify making the protagonists Muslims, she decided to make the Christians bestial mustache-twirling evil-doers? And somehow the fact that the Frankish girl was FIRST raped by Muslims is okay, but the Frankish men raping her (improbably) is beyond the pale? And then she chooses to side with the Muslims? I'm sorry, it only makes the MALES of all peoples seem bad AND sound like she has Stockholm Syndrome.

No idea how close to accurate the history aroudn Saladin is, but I'm enjoying that angle of the story

Slow moving, but there's a kind of poetry to the narrative voice

Very different, fairy-tale style fantasy set in medieval Egypt. Not a kids book, but kind of feels like on (in a good way)
