I meant to read chapter one but then got so distracted by Applebaum’s introduction that I had to stop. She’s so close to the point in her analysis of how Arendt applies to the modern era but somehow entirely misses any thread of continuity, asserting that Arendt was “too pessimistic” in her time, and her predictions are only now bearing out, as if the decades since 1950 played no role in leading us here
