On 15 May 1796, General Bonaparte made his entry into Milan at the head of a youthful army which had just crossed the bridge at Lodi and let the world know that after all these years, Caesar and Alexander had a successor. Just a ridiculous opening line.

Excellent opening chapter (so dense with exposition it's hard to keep up) has drifted into more standard historical fiction fare, but good stuff so far.

"Why should be consider Balzac's novels more profoundly historical than Stendhal's Charterhouse of Parma, for example, the very epitome of the historical novel, with its popular uprisings, its court intrigues, its despots, and its Napoleonic and post-Napoleonic background" - Antinomies of Realism, Fredric Jameson.
