Status Updates From The Book of the New Sun

My goodness this is really bad. Gene Wolfe has an extensive vocabulary, but is a terrible story teller and terrible misogynist. It's almost unreadable. There is almost no plot or political commentary. It's just a collection of non-sequitor scenes and empty characters in an internally inconsistent and incoherent world. How this collection was rated the second best fantasy series since Lord of the Rings baffles me.

Shadow of the Torturer is done! I’m glad that I’m reading this anthology as one large book, because I just found out last night that I was nearing the end of the ‘first book’, and it ends so abruptly I still didn’t believe it.

So far, I’m enthralled by this series. I have no idea what anything means, not much *really* happens, but the storytelling and writing style is so well done I can’t stop

This is the first time I’ve been fiending to read a book like, ever in my life, the worldbuilding and prose is borderline addictive what did Gene Wolfe put in this thing

I’m reading all 4 combined so the percentage is gonna be whack but why am I enjoying this so much I don’t even particularly like fantasy and I have no idea what any of this means but its somehow so captivating???

I need a break. The prose is exhilarating, the little vignettes that feel like thought experiments are thrilling, but goddamn I hate Severian. And I'm beginning to wonder if the misogyny displayed in the book is only Severian's or if those views are shared by Mr. Wolfe...

Started this because I just have SO MUCH TIME for another 1,000 page scifi book ugh someone stop me 🙄😒😮‍💨
