It took about an hour to make the étoufée. We peeled the shrimp, then wilted the vegetables, and added tomatoes and garlic. I found peace in the small motor activity.... To cook is to heal.

knew the kind of man Elvis was when she got with him. So why is it now such an issue, sigh. A tricky case though and Elvis does some excellent investigative work!

actual thing haha. He’s absolutely mental and such a hateable character. I feel really bad for Elvis in this one, I feel like his life really falls apart. He really puts everything on the line for Joe and I feel like honestly Joe was a bit blasé about it which bothered me a bit. This one is why I hate Lucy so much, she just suuucks! I understand a little why she’s mad, but I don’t know what she expected, she

I thought that I’d read this one many time but I must have just flicked through it because I think this was actually my first proper reread from start to finish. This is a very good one but it’s pretty bloody sad at times. Interesting to see a bit of Joe’s past with his last case as a police man which is what made all the cops hate him so much. I still can’t believe that ‘Shit your pants Krantz’ is an

Never a dull moment. A few surprises. From 1999 this was Robert Crais' 8th novel, of which now, in 2021, he's penned around 22. There were twists and turns and a couple hard-to-believe-moments, like someone getting shot twice with a .357 magnum and driving off. But overall, really good stuff. I had read another fine Crais novel before I got on to Goodreads so I already knew he wrote excellent detective novels.

Interesting. Never a dull moment, except some of the early history of, (now, private dick), Joe Pike, all done in italics, which bothers me. At this point it's been revealed the police are after a serial killer. And the author is trying to make the reader believe that serial killer is actually Joe Pike.

I love the voice of the narrator, but for the love of god I wonder if someone held a gun to his head and told him he need to read it in less than 6 hours?!?!...
It’s so hard to follow the speedy reading with all the names and the time jumps... ☹️

This book is still brilliant, but the fact that Cole is mentally designating people who smoke pot as “hopheads” in 1999 is fucking hilarious. Next he’ll be calling alcoholics dipsomaniacs.

I’m cheating by skipping ahead a little, but I couldn’t get ahold of the preceding two. It’s not really bothering me as this one’s already earned five stars. Crais was NOT fucking around with this one.

This novel is interesting as it provides the early background to the character of Joe Pike. Good so far ...

Crais describes things graphically--He took the hurt and the fear and the shame and imagined himself folding them into small boxes...he locked the trunk, threw away the key...

It has a lot of passages with italics--this one especially I don't like because I know from reading others that Joe Pike's mother was abused and of course he witnessed it and tried to get her to stop antagonizing his father. It's just hard to read and even more difficult in italics. I'm just saying.
