I was finding it difficult to follow along with Calvino’s writing style initially, it feels almost a little too flowery sometimes - I get absorbed into the story, then lost between the words. But the more I read, the more I was brought into the world Calvino had built around me, without realising it, I had become “the Reader”

I knew it happened cuz I’ve read this before but having a sex scene in the second person plural using the analogy of reading is brilliant writing

Only 11 pages in, I am engrossed by the writing style in this one! Was struggling with the short story format in Mr Palomar (that book is currently on the back burner)

I would like to be able to write a book that is only an incipit, that maintains for its whole duration the potentiality of the beginning, the expectation still not focused on an object. But how could such a book be constructed? Would it break off after the first paragraph? Would the preliminaries be prolonged indefinitely? Would it set the beginning of one tale inside another, as in the Arabian Nights?

I'm taking a break lol, I love this book actually, but it's very hard to keep straight and if read for too long starts to feel like homework.

I will finish tho, super cool concept and the language is very fun.

Забагато філософії і тексту. Ніби для майстерності й окраси автор перебирає всі слова, але ті, що не підходять, не викидає, а залишає нанизаними на сторінку. І так рядок за рядком. А бо він писав постійно угашеним

It’s a fascinating concept but I wonder if we need to include women in a story if the only purpose they serve is a decorative other. And even in its winding story telling, patch-working stories about train stations and drawing fish and a murder in Paris, the through line is a mistrust of women, especially those who are aware of their condition as the other.

I appreciate his sudden musings on the act of translation. However, I am not convinced of his ability to write female characters.
