I had a really good time discovering what this book actually was about. It should be incredibly irritating, but I found it pretty funny and charming. There were parts that went over my head and made me zone out and feel kinda dumb, but it’s overall a fun read that wrinkled my brain.

I started reading this when i was 15 and could not wrap my head around it. I think i started it at least twice and could never get more than halfway thru. Now that my brain is fully developed im able to get on its wavelength and am enjoying it so much more!

“you begin to harbor a doubt: that she is not reading you, single and whole as you are, but using you, using fragments of you detached from the context to construct for herself a ghostly partner, known to her alone, in the penumbra of her semiconsciousness, and what she is deciphering is this apocryphal visitor, not you” wowwwww

"Listening to someone read aloud is very different from reading in silence. When you read, you can stop or skip sentences: you are the one who sets the pace. When someone else is reading, it is difficult to make your attention coincide with the tempo of his reading: the voice goes either too fast or too slow."

“This is how you have changed since yesterday, you who insisted you preferred a book, something solid, which lies before you, easily defined, enjoyed without risks, to a real-life experience, always elusive, discontinuous, debated. Does this mean that the book has become an instrument, a channel of communication, a rendezvous?”
Ah, the joy of the buddy read :)

Men would rather break into the other readers house and create countless false books without ending so that she can never be satisfied than go to therapy

Swapped to the edition I am actually reading, but man, I am not a fan of Calvino's dour mug on the Everyman's Library cover. My library copy is sans the original jacket, so it's just the navy blue boards with author and title inscribed in gold. Much better.

Wow. (And also, Calvino likes his spy novels.)

I love reading because I’ve read hundreds of books and I can still pick up something unexpected and unlike anything I’ve read before

… I’m still stuck on the Cimmerian. Really? It had to be Cimmeria? [amused] I wonder if Calvino was a Conan fan.
