Disturbing and diverting. I don’t know how I liked it. I did but the extent? I can’t tell.
I loved the afterword but I wasn’t as interested in the story at the end of the book.

So much like a possible P.K. Dick sci-fi.

Big fan of Vandermeer. This put me in a weird mind-state, like all of his books. Incredible writing and interesting to read an earlier one of his works and see the connection and style and ideas that play out in later ones.

The whole story is 238 pages long. This was a slogger up until page 140-150. Now its getting good, but sadly its also about to end

Only now realizing this story only goes to page 238. The rest is the authors note and a bonus short story that I probably wont read

Each Vandermeer book I read is weirder than the last.

First there was lovecraftian existential eco horror, then there was unhinged fungal city ft. evil mushroom people, fungal warfare between publishing companies, and divine squid.

There has been more personality in the beginning of this book then in like the first third of chasm city by Alastair Reynolds. Definitely more my speed

Over the past two years Vandermeer has gone from a one time read to a headliner in my personal hall of fame. Of course his debut would be THIS. Keep it weird, Vandermeer.
