Taking my first grad class ever on Heidegger and aesthetics (not a humanities student so a little intimidated) and literally the first day of class some guy asks how many ppl r reading Heidegger in the original German and I laugh bc come on but then half the ppl raise their hands. Come to realize this course is cross listed with the Germanic studies dept. well—here we go….

This will be my first reading of Heidegger and I'm excited. I've only read the preface so far and the comments of the translator and editors and their rush to warn the reader about the political implications in the book got me even more excited!

"Why are there beings at all instead of nothing?" In order to answer this fundamental question--this most crucial question--we have to presume all the other questions, equally important but by degree, are not properly stated. BUT we need grounding:
The Becoming;
The Seeming;
Thinking;
The Ought.

"Everything we have mentioned is, after all, and nevertheless -- if we want to lay hold of Being it is always as if we were reaching into a void. The Being that we are asking about is almost like Nothing, and yet we are always trying to arm and guard ourselves against the presumption of saying all beings are not."

Pleasantly surprisingly accessible considering it's Heidegger. The only question is and has always been 'why there is something rather than nothing" but the formulation of the question is flawed because we can ask it.

And I thought Kant was difficult... This may be one of the most challenging philosophy books I've ever picked up.

On the earth, all over it, a darkening of the world is happening. The essential happenings in this darkening are: the flight of the gods, the destruction of the earth, the reduction of human beings to a mass, the preemnence of the mediocre.

This is by no means an easy read at all. There is a lot to decipher within each sentence which makes this book not a fast read but a very slow one. Nonetheless, it begins by asking the famous question by Lebniz 'why is there something rather than nothing.' perhaps the most important question to ever ask.

From one book that touches on existentialism through an alternative reality, now onto another book that asks `what does it mean to ask the question`, lets see if Heidegger can provide any answers

I read a little bit more, but have since had to return the book to the library. Am shamefully adding to the 'stalled' shelf. I'll return to it at the beginning of next semester.

Enjoying Heidegger's style, but I've stopped making progress in favor of other reading. Need to pick back up to avoid stalling indefinitely.

Just read the translator's introduction. I'm really excited to read this one, especially after a recommendation by a favorite professor.
