What a wonderful and fascinating book. King teases a story out of many resources on the conception and construction of the dome. The writing is clear, and the story is quick. The next time we go to Florence, I’m going up the dome!

I have a feeling this is going to turn into one of those ‘idly reading a chapter between other books’ book.

This audiobook is on CD 🥲 It’s like getting a lecture on architecture, history, and engineering bless

The only thing I’m learning is the Filippo Brunelleschi was the world’s pettiest menace

Reading for school, it’s definitely good, just some chapters hold my attention while others don’t, but I do like it.

Almost to the end!
After a trip to Italy - which included losing my first copy of this book - and seeing the Dome itself… finally.. we have nearly completed this book!

My trip to Italy is roughly 9 days away. This book is interesting. I will be visiting this landmark… but I am not a smart man. And I know nothing of architecture or mathematics - to this degree at least.
So… I like the story. But the technical bits are definitely over my head.

Diving into my favourite problem question of Italian renaissance: why there are so many professionally trained goldsmiths carrying the Florentine renaissance art scene? Lorenzo Ghiberti, Filippo Bruneleschi, Giorgio Vasari, Benvenuto Cellini…

There is indeed something miraculous about the sight of the dome regardless of where it is viewed from whether close up or far away. The fact that it was built by men and built amid war and intrigue with only a limited understanding of the forces of nature only makes it more of a wonder.

People did not believe possible - a polygonal dome can be constructed without a wooden support network only if a true circular one is contained within its thickness.

Fascinating look at Brunelleschi, who designed and constructed the dome of Florence’s Duomo.
