Theroux says that Gorey's fav musical was 'Leave it to June': 'a movie I have to confess I had never heard of and to which to this day I have never found a single reference.' Presumably he means the very famous 'Leave It To Jane' by Jerome Kern, Guy Bolton, and P.G. Wodehouse.

This book is short but is taking me a long time to read because I have to look up every actor, actress, movie, etc. mentioned, before continuing. I find this worth doing because I've come across fascinating films and people I'd known nothing about, who were brilliant performers. A brief book but packed full of interesting titbits.

'I admire things that are neither one thing nor the other, really. All the things you can talk about in anyone's work are the things that are least important. It's like the ballet. You can describe all the externals of a performance ― everything, in fact, but what really constitutes its core. Explaining something makes it go away, so to speak; what's important is what's left after you have explained everything else.'

I don't want this to end, so I'm putting it off till I wake up. Brilliant!

The writing is, of course, flawless.
