Ch "3 Races"
Sec "Chances of Duration of Am. Union, & Threats to It"
Keeping w/ dT's beliefs that the "the haves vs the have-nots" dynamic would yield a race war in America, he accurately describes the growing rift b/w the South & the North in the 1830s, by which Southerners perceived losing out to the uneven growth of the Northerners' numbers/wealth/opportunity/political power. Seems same thing animating politics rn

Ch "3 Races"
Sec "Sit. of the Black Race"
Surprised at the insight dT sheds here. Taught me that an imbalance arose necessarily b/w North & South b/c in the N abundant white men sought jobs & thus grew wealth but in the S few white men had to support slaves year-round & thus built wealth more slowly. Also he saw "Negroes" [sic] as humans moreso than seemingly Americans, N & S. But also saw a race war as unavoidable.

Ch. The Three Races in the US.
Sect. On "Indians" [sic]
"[Extirpation and broken treaties] are great evils; and... they appear to me to be irremediable. I believe that the Indian nations of North America are doomed to perish, and that whenever the Europeans shall be established on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, that race of men will have ceased to exist."-p.342
Grateful for miracles & societal changes.

“The different states have not only nearly the same interests, the same origin, and the same language, but even the same degree of civilization, which almost always renders agreement between them an easy thing. I do not know if there is a small European nation that does not present an aspect less homogeneous in its different parts than the American people, whose territory is as great as half of Europe.
