I’m seeing a pattern here. Prideful, stubborn people, primarily men, refusing to open their eyes and see what is going on around them and refusing to open their ears and hear the warnings and offers of help from others. Not the first time I’ve read/listened to a WWII book from a descendant where a family was mostly doomed because the patriarch was convinced he was right. Pride really is the deadliest sin.

Poor wittle man’s pride was hurt so he doomed his family to death. Good job!

This is giving me the Princess Bride vibes re: the older family member telling the story to the younger one, complete with interruptions from the younger one. It’s jarring and takes me out of the story. Not sure this is going to work for me. Will give it a full commute and we will see.
