This book is by far the oddest book i’ve read. I feel like Ellen thinks so many things i did not think when i was 10, at least consciously. Yet she is still juvenile and a child, which i think makes this story believable. It’s really opened my eyes to what children can go through with moving families and bad home lives. She reminds me of how I felt when I thought about my dad as a kid-foreign and weird.

in one word i can describe this book: bizarre. Ellen is wise beyond her years, selectively juvenile, states things as facts, only lets her emotions come out without saying them as such. i see my younger self in her, mothering my mama as she cried. i feel like i hardly understand this book, the way it jumps from topic to topic with little explanation and the lack of quotes for dialogue.
