From the reviews I’ve read, not sure if I want to finish this since it’s not adequately researched and verified. Great potential and got hooked by the first chapter but seems rather bland after awhile. I’m all for nerding out on a solid non-fiction book but this just seems conceptual and not backed up.

Women were far more likely to see kissing as a good way to assess a potential mate or to initiate, maintain, and monitor a longterm relationship. They seem to “know” that if things are not going right during our most reproductive years, we’re better off getting out early.

Ugh. I pulled this from my shelf for #bookclub4m biology month, but I don't know if I'm going to finish it. I don't feel like the research is very well contextualized or filtered. Maybe I'll skip ahead a section and see if it improves at all once we're past the "origin" of kissing (i.e. lots of speculative evo-psych garbage).

The more I read this book, the more I love it. Not just because the science is interesting, but because it often speaks from a female perspective and is very inclusive or at least actively aware of homosexuality.

Very interesting so far! I had heard some of it, but not with this much detail. The theories so far are very interesting. Some are more plausible than others...haha

Got to appreciate that she begins with the Princess Bride quote, "Is this a kissing book?" (Why, yes. Yes it is.)

In a survey of college students, 1 in 7 women would consider sex with someone she had not first kissed; the majority of men reported that they "would not be deterred". Wow. I wonder how one finds themselves in that situation.

"Psychologist Arthur Aron of the SUNY at Stony Brook has found that staring into a partner's eyes has a tremendous impact on the feelings associated with falling in love. In his study, Aron paired male and female strangers together for an hour and a half, instructing them first to discuss intimate details of their lives and then, at the end of the time period, to stop talking and stare into one another's eyes for

Best research ever: researchers interested in whether modern men could subconsciously detect a woman's estrus ("being in heat at peak fertility") by examining tips earned by 18 exotic dancers. "Dancers earned, on average, $70 per hour when ovulating, $35 per hour when menstruating, and $50 per hour during the weeks in between. Notably, women on birth control pills did not show the earnings peak."

The real "eskimo kiss" does not actually involve rubbing noses together. "Instead, it's a kind of nuzzle-sniff. To properly bestow a kunik, you press your nostrils against the skin of a loved one and breathe in..." I've been doing trying these kisses since I read that. It's odd.

I am still in the intro and cannot stop giggling when the definition of kissing is said to include the lips being pressed on some other part of another's body. Also, I am sooo mature.
