I absolutely despise the fact that this book happens in two different times at the same time. I can't distinguish between the past and the present and that sucks.
I really like Arundhati as a person, but umm the book...

I thought Esther and Baby were twins instead of Rahel and Esther for the first 30 pages.

The looping and repetition here is insane. It is sooo controlled and so deliberate. Everything keeps echoing back on itself and I’m just sitting here in awe of how precisely this is built. It is so rare that I get to enjoy such purposeful structure.

This is just beautifully structured. The movement between past and present is so smooth and controlled, and you can feel how deliberate every choice is. I’m honestly in awe of the craft here... it’s masterful.

Estoy devastada.

It is one of those books where you just need to take time and bask in the craft.

No doubt the writing style is difficult to read. I saw some reviews and read that many people dnfed the book because of its writing style, but I'm having a feeling that reading it will be worth it. So....less do this.

Absolutely useless. So hard to get through this. I don’t get the hype. Waste of time, didn’t enjoy it one bit.

Absolutely gorgeous writing. Roy's description is sumptuous, immersive, and so controlled. I’m in awe of the character work already. The few pages on Baby Kochamma, in particular, is a masterclass in quiet characterisation. It embodied show, don't tell. I'm so impressed so far.

Wow. Baby Kochamma is a masterclass in character writing. So cleverly written. Roy doesn't spell it out, she plants a series of disappointments like breadcrumbs so that we can make those inferences. Bravo.

Are there so many names that I'm quite confused? Yes. Am I considering putting together a diagram of the family tree? Maybe? Are the descriptive parts absolutely gorgeous? Yes. Am I going to keep pushing through? Also, yes.

I’m having a hard time keeping people and time straight. Listening to the audiobook. Might have been easier to read and flip through pages as needed.

“-Me sentía feliz -dijo Ammu, y se dio cuenta de que sí, habia sido feliz.
-Ammu, si eres feliz en un sueño, ¿cuenta? -preguntó Estha.
-¿Que si cuenta qué?
-La felicidad. ¿Cuenta?
Sabía perfectamente a lo que se refería aquel hijo suyo con el tupé deshecho.
Porque la verdad es que sólo cuenta lo que cuenta.
La sabiduría simple e inquebrantable de los niños.”

I'm so crazy about this book this time around. It is one of those books you have to read right away again after you first read it. The content of the story unfolds so gradually that you (at least I) reach a point where you can't figure out what's going on... but that's just because of all the shifts in perspective around a single event that is referenced, but once you get it, you have to read it again. It's so great.

Very well written. Believable. Real. The characters are people I’d like to meet. Well most of them.

I’m disappointed, I really thought this would be a 5 ⭐️ The story is great but the execution is questionable (overdid the metaphors) and some things really did not need to happen (why are the siblings going dumb numb for 25 years then have sex?!)
