Status Updates From Out of Place: A Memoir

Edward’s small anecdote about his gay friend Afif, the singer, being murdered by stabbing in 1982, and how it was a indicator, “of the Israeli invasion three months later, end of the Lebanese Civil War raging, ferociously all around where Afif lived in Ras Beirut” remind me why it’s worth reading this memoir. Yet another firsthand bit of information that contextualizes Israel’s current pink washing.

The fact that Edward’s long life and career in New York, teaching at Columbia, came about because he signed a contract for his Dad’s business, as a favor, that ended up violating an exchange-control law without Edward knowing——making him unable to return to Cairo for 15 years afterward to evade imprisonment——leaves me stunned and pensive… what the world nearly lost… no Orientalism!!!

هي أيضا أول من نقل إلى مشقة أن يكون المرء بلا وطن أو مكان يعود إليه، محروما من حماية سلطة أو مؤسسات وطنية، عاجزا أن يعطي ماضيه أي معنى غير الأسف المرير العاجز، وعن أن يعطي أي معنى لحاضره غير الوقوف في الصف يوميا والبحث القلق عن العمل ومعاناة الفقر والجوع والمذلة.

لكن حاجتي العارمة إلى المعرفة والاختبار هي التي خرقت قيود الأهل.
