I find this comment irritating. It's about Samson who grew up in the mountains around a bunch of "uncultured" folk. It's referring to a society lady. "She had been loyal, and had shaped with her deft hand and brain the rough clay of his crude personality into something that was beginning to show finish and design". Why make Samson sound like an uncouth vagabond because he wasn't around well schooled people?

This isn't very exciting.

Instead of the tough mountain man, Samson is now the country bumpkin in New York.
