It's rare that I dislike a book this strongly so early, but I'm getting a bit "bitch eating crackers" about the writing style. I can't help but compare the setting to Tanith Lee's scifi, but this writing voice is so dead by comparison. Everything is maddeningly "tell" not "show," the characters are so passive I was actively squicked by the last chapter, and the gross-out depictions of poverty just kind of make me mad

Well, the sudden and casual anti-Hispanic racism baked into this futuristic worldbuilding isn't making me feel great

This is an extremely underrated book which would be extremely successful were it published today as it was ahead of its time. It has been the highlight of the year and I’m sad to be nearing the end…

“He was a man who enjoyed being amazed by the new. Some people, you give them something to admire and they want to piss on it, they want to walk away from it because it makes them feel small. David liked to feel astounded, to stretch his mind around new facts, new theories, to knock them around and size them up and study them. Then when he felt he understood, he yearned to explain to others.”
