Status Updates From Rangoon

Out of all of Monson's books this was the one I was most nervous about. It's not perfect - there are 100% things that will make you cringe -- but it's reminding me so much of Olivia and Jai. The anti-colonialist critique in here is at some points deliciously scathing, and at others extremely clunky.

There was some actual communication between the MCs, finally, clearing up some of the misunderstandings, but it appears they are to be separated again.

If this book was depending on the romance alone, this would be a DNF. Way too much melodrama and denial of feelings. "But I only had to rape you a little" .... yea. But there is riding on elephants, gibbons, crossing rough terrain, rope bridges, multiple cultures & culture clashes, all beautifully drawn. If only the romance was as beautifully drawn.

I have been enjoying this so far, but I have hit a bit of a wall. I hope the misunderstandings/angst does not take too long to resolve. But, seeing how much book is left, I am not optimistic. Also a section of my book fell out, thankfully the part I have already read..

Descriptions of culture are great...quite a bit of time spent with the heroine and other characters
