I forgot exactly how horrible the Ashfords are to Stephen when they first meet him. Justice for Hobbes fr
Also, I completely forgot about Tobias as a character. Where was he in book three??
This is definitely still an enjoyable read even when you know more about the magic system than Stephen does at this time. It's actually easier to pick up on nuances and hints, especially to the Winged.

The cat was just viciously attached and the whole process is described in great detail. I personally can handle any kind of torture or cruelty done to humans but animals is where I draw the line. I’m debating on finishing the book or skipping forward. I really feel like their should have been a trigger warning for animal abuse

I'm not sure I want to continue this book. I'm routing for the underdog, but there are some seriously nasty characters who behave cruelly, entitled and more self obsessed than my sense of justice can handle. It's the first in a new series but if one specific character doesn't get karma by the end, that's it.

Wow. I was not expecting graphic depictions of violence against a cat. I'm done.

Loving the magic in this series. The prose really flows and I am captive of the 'just one more chapter' fever.

We've had social, socioeconomic, and theological lessons so far. There's a lot of "explaining" and not a whole lot of "doing". I'm pleased that this book hasn't started with "... it turns out I'm the second coming... and I'm going to save the world..." but I'm beginning to think the main protagonist is going to turn out to be quite bland if things don't pickup!

I just learned from this book that UK traffic lights turn yellow before green. So the next time somebody tells you that reading fiction is a pointless waste because you don't gain any useful knowledge from it, please remember that they are rotten liars. That is all.

Drawback is the incredibly high amount of explanation about the magic system. The way is handled here is even for my standards a turn-off. Too much!

Ok, I get it, not having your friend belive you sucks. But you are actively deciding to not show him any proof that magic exists. What do you expect him to think other than you are really into your little play-acting hobby. Just show him the goddamn magic trick and all he will belive you, you idiot.

This sudden swerve into Christian apologetics was a bit weird.

This is so weird because I don't dislike this but I wanted an Urban Fantasy and this reads almost like a litRPG? None of the staples for a UF are here - no mystical creatures, secret societies, horror elements. Lots and lots of explanation for how skills work though, even some numbers strewn in to boot.
Idk how I feel about it.

The story is picking up for me now that Stephen is making more of a plan for his next steps instead of just reacting to events. It's urban fantasy in a very earnest, sincere style; that's not a knock against it, and is if anything a nice break from painfully unfunny "snarky" protagonists in this genre. There's a real pinch of progression fantasy influence here-- interested to see how the rest of the book goes.
