Status Updates From The Best of Simple: Stories

This book is interesting in that it is like a sitcom where I could see it playing in 30 minute episodes. It makes it really easy and fun to read. Jesse Semple (Simple) is a mess, but he will always do things his way. Each chapter is a dialogue between Simple and our narrator, who is very wise and always tries to get reality out in front of Simple- he just fails to bite. And, oh, the consequences. Likable characters.

This is going to go quickly. I like Hughes' Semple character.

An uneven experience so far -- including classic wry critiques of bigotry and classism intermixed with plenty of misogyny. I'm wanting more of the jazzy humorous prose that may not be here, but I know to be in Hughes' work.

An entertaining and easy read. Will have you giggling as well as stepping into someone else’s shoes with a…persistent personality type.
