As with everything else I've read from Rebecca Solnit, this is exquisitely crafted and a joy to read. Every paragraph, every word seems carefully chosen and constructed. She's drawing interesting parallels between being lost internally - in your own mind - and being lost externally - in the world. I love the historical references she makes for 17th and 18th century explorers for whom being lost was a way of life.

A really intriguing book, but it's also heavy and difficult to read at times. A slow progress.

So far, a meditation on the color blue and the importance of losing yourself in the world. Already know that I will read this book again.

Definitely one of those books that came to me at exactly the right moment. Definitely definitely.

I am currently LOVING this Rebecca Solnit book. Here's a quote that's worth revisiting: "A city is built to resemble a conscious mind, a network that can calculate, administer, manufacture. Ruins become the unconscious of a city, its memory, unknown, darkness, lost lands, and in this truly bring it to life."

Just picked this back up off the nightstand. I am enjoying reading it again, however slowly. It seems that the book is only suitable for me when I am in a certain moderately spiritual place.

"Beauty is often spoken of as though it only stirs lust or admiration, but the most beautiful people are so in a way that makes them look like destiny or fate or meaning" (96)

I'm devouring this book. It's hard for me to put down, and even though it's nothing like I expected, I love it.
