Finished "The Shadow of the Torturer": I'm definitely in foreign literary territory (I'm apparently allergic to world-building and magic and video-game-like levels and quests), but there have been glimmers of intellect-tickling material. So far, not really into it, but the last line ("Reader, I understand if you want to stop here...") provoked me in an effective way. I'll continue with Severian's journey.

Quietly and strangely fascinating. Other than the archaic words that didn't move me to do much but look them up, the reading was breezy. I'm moving straight on to book two of this high scifi. 4-5 stars.
