It has been fascinating to read a bildungsroman set in Wales at the beginning of the second world war. I enjoyed seeing philosophy from a teenage perspective, offering a new perspective on war and conscientious objection from people, next in line to fight, thrown together through circumstances outside their control, at a time when adulthood is causing its own natural difficulties in identity and self expression.
