I have actually been reading this book for two weeks. It weighs like 4 kilos and is about a foot long. That being said it reads beautifully, and brings a new dimension to looking at history. It’s supremely easy to become lost in this book, hate these figureheads of evil more deeply than on a factual basis, yet feel why the German people became so truly lost in a facade. Beautiful so far.

I can't help but feel that the novel has drifted away completely from its portrayal of Göring. While the first half of the book was very close to his character, the second just mentions him from time to time, while other characters get more valuable screen time.

"There is one thing to be said for defeat: it simplifies things. What room is there for soul-searching, conscious or otherwise, in a country whose only sensation is that of a boot pressed on its neck? Shame? Guilt? Self-doubt? All such debilitating complications are squashed to nothing by the solid simplicity of resentment, hatred, self-pity, self-righteousness."

I'm making good progress even though this book is so long :) the prose is nice and flowing and the occasioaal changes in POV serve to keep the narration interesting.

Okay, so ... while the portrayal of Göring is astoundingly layered and truly comendable, his brother Karl Ernst did NOT die in WWI, he died in 1932 after having married and even having children. Also, the Göring's sisters have inexplicably disappeared from the Narration - why??

Excellent book. The only negative comment I could make is maybe it made Goring too human at times. Who knows. Maybe he had his moments, but what he ended up doing was an atrocity.
