"Much is said...about the number of deer reputedly slaughtered by wolves. Very little is said about the actual numbers of wolves slaughtered by men. In one case a general falsehood is widely and effectively disseminated; in the other the truth seems to be suppressed. Yet one trapper...collected bounty on 118 wolves of which 107 were young ones born the previous spring."

"When he was ten feet from Albert - who was still dead to the world - George drew his hindquarters up under him and, after pausing long enough to fully savor the moment, launched himself...The impact of 150 odd pounds of pouncing wolf ought to have knocked the wind clean out of Albert; but...he produced a brand-new sound for my catalogue of wolf noises. It was a high-pitched snarl of shock and outrage."

"To say I was chagrined to discover I was not alone would be an understatement; for sitting directly behind me...were the missing wolves...Under almost any other circumstances I would have been panic stricken...Outraged, I turned my back on the wolves and...hurriedly did up my buttons. When decency, if not my dignity, had been restored, I rounded on the wolves...'Shoo!...you peeping Toms!'"

Why did I not know this book was funny? Mowat getting dropped off in fully uncharted territory, thinking he hears a pack of wolves bearing down on him and hiding under a canoe, only for it to be…a team of huskies and a confused trapper, is some Bill Bryson shit!

"When this book was published in the Soviet Union the translators had a little trouble with the title. The version they finally came up with was: 'Wolves, Please Don't Cry'*. I hope it is a portent of things to come...If we can indeed save the wolf it will, in some small measure, be a rejection of the strictly human crime of biocide."
