Not a critique of this book but his most recent book has reused the setting of this one — a walled town with golden furry unicorn beasts — and I can’t decide if that’s lazy or clever. He has a penchant for recycling themes and motifs.
What IS lazy is providing a map of the town in this original book but not in the other one, though it kind of makes sense since the other book asks for thoughtful imagination?

This is the oldest novel of his I’ve read to date, it’s more than 40 years old and he HAS gotten better as time has gone on 🥴 the fact he’s one of my favourite authors despite it is a testament to his talent

Murakami is such a brilliant writer. I’ve read many of his books, and I still can’t believe how incredible he is. Living in Tokyo now gives me a completely different perspective on his work the atmosphere, the neighborhoods, and even the small details he describes feel much more vivid and real.

It’s not always time for Murakami but when it’s time for Murakami it’s time
