Status Updates From The Particular Sadness of L...

Took a much needed recess & have returned with a stronger heart to finish. Now can't stand for it to be over. (SPOILER) The late night talk betwn Rose & Dad (ch 42) was excruciating. Esp "He nodded vigorously, as if he'd prepared himself."
But every time Bender makes me cry, she follows up with a few pgs of such drenching, sensual prose that I laugh, smile, & breathe deeply.

A lot more than I bargained for...sparking pain & hope about our own children.

Ah, so many human & parental themes, my head is swimming!

Okay, I am hooked on Aimee Bender and wish I could cast myself 200 years into the future to hear how classrooms dissect & elevate her chapters. Also, today being Cinco de Mayo and I am practically guaranteed a night on the town for excellent Mexican food, I cannot wait to enjoy my meal s-l-o-w-l-y...

Very cool book, unusual

"In the dewy air after the spray of the sprinklers, I liked to wander down the sidewalk and scoop up any flapping worms with a folded leaf and stick them back in the dirt. I was, in general, an easygoing kid like that, a rescuer of worms."

Okay, Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. I'm counting on you to be better than your average review score indicates!

I can't wait to get back to this. The writing looks pretty fantastic so far!

The mother's tendency to be overwhelmed with possibilities and choices reminds me a lot of myself.

The beginning of this book is making me want depserately to be in a room where a cake is baking it. What a delicious smell - warm, buttery, sweet cake in the oven.

Love this line, for some reason: "The world had matched what he'd dreamed up, and he settled himself inside what they'd made."

Huh? I'm really not sure what I think about this one.

My first Bender experience; I'm liking it so far. I think were I'm at in the book can go two drastically different ways: one, to being one of the best books I've read this year, or, two, to a repetitive, droll, unsatisfying conclusion that leaves too many things unexplained.

Only Just Begun . . . The lack of punctuation is annoying. The voice of Rose at nine years old is unrealistic. How can a nine year old articulate "absence, spiraling, hollows" as feelings and emotions? Vivid writing, some beautiful descriptions, but perhaps too descriptive at times.
