“At this point, the manuscript is interrupted; numbered pages 118-132 are missing.” be still my heart, I would’ve loved to be the fly on the wall for this scene.

"A shriek, fearful to hear, and thrice fearful to give, followed by another, and another, and a maniac lay foaming and writhing on the floor at my feet." I think Emma would have had a hard time with the internet.

xxiii - I find Gary Williams more persuasive on the subject of Charles Sumner's possible homosexuality than I found Zaakir Tameez. Maybe because Gary Williams includes more of that quote about how Charles Sumner should have been born a woman and Samuel Howe ought to have married him - and it's not verbatim from Julia herself, it is from SAMUEL WRITING TO CHARLES ABOUT WHAT JULIA SAID.

This is a ComCat and the expiration date is coming up pretty fast! Step it to the front of the queue. It also happens that I am reading Howe's near-contemporary and fellow abolitionist Lydia Maria Child and her "Appeal in Favor of That Class of Americans Called Africans," which may be published in 1833 but remains educational, urgent, visceral reading about slavery, both nationally and globally.
