Was also recommended this by mum, who didn't realise it was the same author as Salmon Fishing On The Yemen. It's a different kind of book, more of a ghost story. The unsatisfactory relationships are still a feature - he seems to enjoy writing them. I'm not far into it, but can see myself getting sucked in.

My third attempt at finishing this and finally finding that the pace and intrigue is increasing into the second half of the book.

This book is starting to lose me but I'm too far in to not finish it...

The era is still quite confusing, it has a very The Yellow Wallpaper (Charlotte Perkins Gilman) feel to it; talk of monacles and claret and telegrams yet also of laptops and mobiles. Maybe it's meant to describe the old English elite sticking to tradition? I won't give a spoiler away but working in health this book is not so intriguing for me...

The temporal aspect is so confusing! It feels like an early 1900's novel but then there will be talk of mobile phones and neurofen. I'm trying to get more of a bead on the two main characters (the gascoines). Slowly getting into it... It also reminds me of The Yellow Wallpaper a bit with eerie old house/mental health themes.

Just finished chapter 2 and that Michael is not looking promising at all!

It took me some time to finish the book as I had a sense of where it was heading - and I did not want to go there. There is some beautiful writing.

Typical Torday, which is not to say that it is at all predictable - rather that it is thoroughly captivating, just like all his other books.
