The author had trained as an artist under his father and there is a marvellous three pages in which he describes how in a Nazi prison he distracted himself by imagining various items embodying rich shades of colour.

The passage is too long to quote but pls 89-96 are a wonderful reconstruction of a "kris", a grand council meeting of the Romani, in which they debate using highly poetic figurative language, whether they should ally themselves with the gaje opposing the Nazis or should retain their independence from all gaje.

Very happy to find this, a couple of years after enjoying his earlier book about his adolescent years traveling on and off with a Romani family in 1930's Europe.
