The first story in Dick Tracy starts with Dick going to his girlfriend's parent house for dinner. Her name is Tess Trueheart. Her father has just paid off their mortgage AND Dick ends up proposing to Tess. Then a crook busts in to steal Mr. Trueheart's money. There is a stand-off and Tess's father gets shot in cold blood and Tess is kidnapped. Tracy becomes a plain clothes detective and saves the girl. Thus, we begin

In contemplating Batman's gallery of rogues, I starting thinking back to my first comic book obsession, Dick Tracy. Chester Gould's gallery of rogues provided Bob Kane with the inspiration for the villains that would come to define Batman.
