Conclusion-John says the world needs love leadership and good capitalism to save us from the recent financial collapse. We got to the crisis because too many ppl were out for themselves, indifferent to who got hurt, bad capitalism. We need good capitalism, meaning you want others to win as well. With good capitalism, we create hope for others, that anything is possible, and that hope is much needed.

Giving is getting- There’s nothing wrong to admitting there’s a bit of selfishness in giving because you will get back, it’s all in the intent however. Good selfishness is good. It’s ok to want to benefit, you just have to want others to benefit more.

Giving is getting- Celebrate their achievements even after they decide to leave for elsewhere. Intent matters when you are serving ppl. What goes around, comes around. You get what you give and you can get the most from ppl by helping them find their passion as they’re more likely to do work they’re inspired to do rather than forced to do. Doing good pays off, pay it forward and it’ll come back to you.

Giving is getting- To live a successful and rewarding life, you must use what’s given to you to give back to others but give without expectations, just with a purpose of doing good for others. Giving starts internally, serve your ppl inside your organization first by showing up everyday for your staff inside and outside of work.

Giving is getting- His sacrifices have paid dividends because now he has some of the most committed, passionate and hard-working employees at operation hope. The more you give, the more you get. Be a servant leader, invest in other and grow your ppl to one day be servant leaders themselves.

Giving is getting- John shares the story about taking on the responsibility and stress to raise additional capital for operation hope when they had the $2 million hole in their annual budget because of the 2008 financial crisis. He did that so that they didn’t have to close offices and lay off employees because their employees are more than numbers to them.

Vulnerability is power- when you open up to ppl, they open up to you and more likely to follow your lead because you’ll naturally attract them & not have to coerce them. True leaders will build ladders for others instead of climbing their own ladders. Make deep connection with ppl by meeting them where they are and they’re most likely to open up to you there. Vulnerability create mutual prosperity & real power.

Vulnerability is power- Even when he had to work with unethical ppl, he tried not to judge them & found a way to get to his fundraising goal. He says is important to be transparent & that leaders demonstrate their character and build integrity, credibility and trust by how they work through their problems and manage pain. Ppl are most likely to forgive your mistake when you’re honest & admit them; have courage.

Vulnerability is power- in this chapter, John shares the story of how he had to decline some unethical partnership opportunities that would’ve yield big money for them during the financial collapse of 2008. Even when they were losing on certain financial commitments, he had to make tough calls and his board of trustees had faith in him because he was being vulnerable and open with them through everything.

Love makes money- In summary, take no shortcut to try to get rich because short-termism isn’t sustainable. Don’t take advantage of other ppl for a quick money get rich scheme. If you do right by ppl, you’ll have their business forever and therefore be wealthy; a by product of love leadership.

Love makes money- Ask about their passions and what you can do to help them and it’ll disarm them because they’ll be more open to you and trust you. However, you have to be actually believe in what you are sharing and doing because you can’t fake authenticity. Ppl can pick up on fake, inauthentic bs easily.

Love makes money- You have to be willing to think about others, care for other more than you think and care for yourself. Go in with a mindset to serve ppl because how you treat ppl whether in good times or bad will define your true measure of wealth. Learn about them before trying to solicit any money or business deal from them.

Love makes money- John talks about the importance of doing business the right way. Do not do shady business and unethical things to get an advantage over ppl. Building long term relationship with ppl you do business with can yield into money. He writes “Love leads to money. Money is nothing more than one of the many byproducts of love leadership. It’s a byproduct, never the product.

In Fear Fails, John says that leading with fear doesn’t work. It may have short term success but in the long term, it’ll lead to failure. Ego and greed are normally the motivators of fear so it’s critical to have good self esteem to combat fear. Having a purpose in life eliminates insecurity and make you care so therefore yields to leading with love rather than fear.

Loss creates leaders- it was John’s fall from grace during his childhood that led him here. His family losing their house bc of his dad’s financial illiteracy, then his own ego & losing almost everything he was earning as child actor to sleeping in his car for 6 months to make ends meet, etc. His losses pushed him for the success he has now because there can be no strength without pain of legitimate suffering .

Loss creates leaders- John told them that the ppl of the community didn’t burn down their houses, just vacant commercial buildings. He shared that renters were spending as much as homeowners, so it would make sense if bankers would invest in home to make these ppl homeowners as feasible interest rates and everybody wins. It worked out for operation hope and their work continues till this day with no incident.

Loss creates leaders-John shares the story of how the losses he’s experienced in life led him to his purpose & operation hope. It was the aftermath of Rodney king trial when south central was burning down that John decided he needed to do something for his community looking from the glass window of his banking job. He gathered banking leaders on a bus, toured them around telling them the history of the community.

Intro- Bryant talks about growing up in Compton, having friends die for being in wrong gangs and not knowing themselves, to jobs in corporate America and entrepreneurship, and to discovering the antidote of fear, love. By being apart of young global leaders, he was given front row on to learn how to lead with love. He once wrote a list of differences between love and fear that led to the writing of this book.
