Amazing how timeless Cicero's guidance to his son is. This essay could be a graduation speech from last weekend.

started with introduction and On Mortal Duties, book 1 then skipping to On Old Age, then comparing translations of Scipio's Dream. the other book has the First Philippic to read and this contains the second.

Such reassuring reading. Started this last night with the news on in the background and it was like wearing a thunder vest.

Just finished the section of Cicero's Basic Works titled "De Oratore" (On The Character Of The Orator) which is a masterly treatment of the subject itself. On aspect I like about this piece is that it is set in dialogue form, the same form of treating subjects used by Plato, Augustine, and other greats. The next section is "First Oration Against Catiline" (259-279).
