The author is showing his age. Gas stations were self-service in the 90s. Downers Grove isn't some farmer's paradise and hasn't been for ages. A suburban teenager wanting to be a farmer is odd. Asking someone if they've "ever been to Chicago" is even weirder (it's literally right there...). The teenage heroine calls the TV the "boob toob" like a middle-aged father. Just... what the hell is this book haha
