Status Updates From Confederates

Alright, having read more of the play, I am becoming a little disheartened. The comparison of modern day racial tension with vignettes of days in slavery is a brilliant idea, but the comparison is so one to one, the themes, characters, and dialogue is becoming very heavy handed. There is little nuance to the final message Morisseau is rendering, so far. I wonder if this will be subverted.

I was enjoying this play until one particular scene felt a little try-hard on the playwright’s part; a professor and student arguing about racial politics and prejudices to see who has it worse…? Not the most nuanced scene…

In a brilliant move, Dominique Morisseau has subverted the expectations of her own fans by presenting an opening monologue that is deeply funny and impactful. Though she has had humor in her other plays, she definitely set a whole new tone for this "satire" that is unfamiliar to those who love her work... and that is just the first five pages! I am excited for the rest.
