I feel like it’s 2017 and I’m watching Orange Is the New Black again, but this time it’s a dead old man aggressively calling the penal system stupid in like 50 different ways instead of Piper crying about prison reform. Was NOT expecting this level of radical introspection from Tolstoy but I’m here for it

I learned after starting that this is the book that led to Tolstoy being excommunicated. He had definitely thrown off any fears about criticizing — well, everything. The prison system, the church, the wealthy land owners of Russia… This book ain’t pulling its punches
