This novel touches very important topics, but I cannot shake off the feeling that I’m reading a newspaper report. One action after another, story told like in the news.

The German bombings had failed to achieve their ultimate goal of terrorizing the British population into surrendering. Minutes after the enemy planes retreated and the sirens announced the end of a bombing, people emerged from their hiding places, smoothing out their clothes, feigning a calm that no one felt, and began the work of putting out fires and searching for survivors among the rubble.
