Goals are inherently built to cause you to pursue and push through all hurdles. Sometime, this is harmful and causes you to look narrowly at your options. Including an “unless” statement allows you to give you avenues out. This focuses on the progress made over the outcome.

This quote is powerful: “One of the steps to becoming a better quitter is to not accept ‘I’m not ready to make a decision right now’ as a sentence that makes sense. At every moment of your life, you have a choice about whether to stay or whether to go. When you choose to stay, you are also choosing not to go. When you chose to quit, you are also choosing to not continue. These are the same decisions.”

The other thing she began talking about is a kill list. Similar to the conversation about boundaries I had in my negotiations class. Before starting a project, create a clear set of items or things you could learn that would cause you to stop with what you are doing. This list allows you to stay clear headed about the direction and when to quit.

Recently, I have read about the Monkey and the pedestal. Do not give yourself a sense of false progress by focusing on the easy stuff (the pedestals), instead focus on the monkey (the difficult bottlenecks). Pedestals create a sense of false progress.
