And the author couldn’t help but slip back into using foreign languages — French and some Latin. It’d be OK if we were all highly educated, but we aren’t, so I find myself in complete disagreement with using foreign languages without a following English translation.

The fall of Mesolongi was a significant loss for the Greeks, and several thousand perished from Ottoman attacks on the fleeing residents. It was not the first time Mesolongi had been besieged, but this time Ibrahim Pasha joined the fight, tipping the balance there. England, France, and Russia were soon entering to help tip the final balance.

Both ways, infighting served to swing balance one way or another. Possibly a record two civil wars between Greeks while still at war with the Ottoman Empire took the cause off-course, allowing the Turks under Ibrahim Pasha with his Egyptian forces to start reclaiming territories. This woke up the Greeks who quickly put differences aside to eventually reach the goal of freedom.
It was a very eventful war.

Lord Byron died of an undetermined illness in Mesolongi, despite the attention of a team of doctors in his late 30s. His non-combat death still lent considerable emotion to the Greek cause. “Your presence will operate as a talisman. With Byron dead, the Greek cause could not die,” said a prominent soldier in the fight from the British Isles.

Lord Byron died for Greece. Not exactly that, but the wealthy celebrity poet was in Greece, serving British interests in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire.
He died there, not on the battlefield, but his death was met with a fervor that helped to further tip the political scales in favor of the rebelling Greeks, edging Britain, France, and eventually Russia in action against the Turks.

Chios.
The Turkish massacre of Greeks on the island of Chios served to bring serious global revulsion from the senseless slaughter of men, women, children, hospital patients, and thousands burned seeking shelter in monasteries. Britain was the first European power to visually break from neutrality.

274 foreign fighters died in the Greek fight for freedom, and no Russians were counted. Brewer notes that the Spanish Civil War, 1936-39, had some visible similarity in modern times with its emotional appeal to individuals while most governments kept their distance.

Unintentionally aiding the Greeks in their struggle to be free was serious infighting between factions of the sultan’s military. Brewer captured the essence on those fights, which also led to the disbanding of the Janissaries, previously his elite soldiers in 1826.

Less French more English, and I’m getting a clearer picture of how this war got started, and who were its leaders.

Brewer gets better, but slips back into the French, which I disagree with because it's not inclusive with many readers. Smatterings of well-intended foreign languages are exclusive to many readers and potential readers.
Writers doing this lose readers, and book buyers.
Mistake.

Brewer started a little slow for me with possibly too much French. It was warranted due to French influence in the earliest of beginnings in this long, and sometimes confusing conflict. Unfortunately, French was not a regular class offering in the schools I attended, and my Spanish only goes so far here.
But then it gains speed after Chapter 3. Regis and Korais were independence-prone instigators, often overlooked.
